Karavomilos
Karavomilos is een relatief nieuw dorp dat ontstaan is na 1953 toen de bewoners van Vlachata hun dorp verlieten om aan de kust te gaan wonen. Karavomilos heeft haar naam te danken aan het rad van een oude raderboot, dat draaide op de kracht van het in zee stromende water. Op de strook tussen het meer van Karavomilos en de zee ziet u nog steeds een waterrad draaien. Tot enkele jaren geleden leverde het draaiende rad energie aan de molen, die graan daardoor kon vermalen tot meel. De bakker in het dorp bakte hier knapperige broden van.
Het dorp Karavomilos
In Karavomilos zijn enkele tavernes en een bakker. Het heeft ook een kleine haven, waar de vissers ’s morgens vroeg hun bootjes aanmeren, om vervolgens de tavernes van verse vangst te voorzien. Het is een langgerekt dorp en het strand strekt zich uit langs de volle lengte. Als u vroeg opstaat, kunt u niet alleen de vissersboten binnen zien komen, maar ook genieten van de zonsopkomst over het water. Er is een wandelpromenade die leidt naar het dorp Sami, dat twee kilometer verderop ligt.
Fietsen op Kefalonia
Vanwege de redelijke vlakke kuststreek kunt u hier goed fietsen. Gaat u het binnenland in, dan zult u een tandje bij moeten zetten. Agia Effimia ligt op zes kilometer afstand en heeft een gezellige haven met diverse tavernes. Deze afstand kunt u per fiets afleggen, maar ook de bus, alhoewel de rijschema’s beperkt zijn, rijdt vanuit Karavomilos zowel naar Sami als naar Agia Effimia. De kleine en haast privé strandjes op de route naar Agia Effimia zult u wanneer u met de bus gaat, dan moeten missen.
